CASIO EXILIM EX-FR100 Free-Style Outdoor Camera Review

Written by

There are many action cameras available to choose from today, but many of them have one glaring limitation, the need for a smartphone to act as the screen and/or controller. With the free-style camera, CASIO EXILIM EX-FR100 though, this minor inconvenience is eliminated.

CASIO EXILIM EX-FR100, the concept behind the FR100 is simple, it’s an action camera with two modules, one is the camera itself, and the other is the controller/ screen. This combination allows you to easily take photos from a myriad of different angles, without sacrificing your composition.

Casio make things easier by slapped on a 16mm f/2.8 lens into the camera module, so you won’t have any problems taking wide-angle photos. With the wide aperture, taking photos in challenging lighting conditions is possible as well. As the FR100 is an action camera at its core, Casio also released several optional accessories to enhance its functionality. The EAM-7 is a ring LED that’s good for low-light photography, as well as a little bit of portraiture, while the EAM-5 is an underwater casing that allows you to take underwater shots up to 20m in depth.

The most interesting accessory for the FR100 though, is the EAM-6, which is best described as a monopod that delivers a live-feed to the controller. You attach the camera module on one end, and the controller at the other. A cable is then connected to both, to deliver a live-feed. This is particularly useful when you want to take photos of fishes without getting yourself wet.

The EX-FR100 does show the limitations of a relatively small sensor, struggle when taking subjects with fine details. There are not much fine details in subjects beyond 200m, and low-light photos tend to be slightly noisy. However, when shooting outdoors, image quality is good and color rendition is great.

Overall, the EXILIM EX-FR100 is extremely easy to use, and definitely a great camera to have if you love outdoor activities. The sensor does struggle when taking subjects with fine details, but if you’re doing outdoor sports, it’s all about capturing the experience itself, and not minute details. The camera is light and easy to use, and because it’s detachable, allows you to take some pretty creative shots. Also, it’s worth mentioning that this camera supports the EXILIM Auto Transfer feature, which automatically transfers pictures to a connected smartphone for easy sharing.
