Synology DiskStation DS716+ 2-Bay NAS Review

Written by

Over the years, Synology continually tops itself with better and better NAS systems. Last year, the DiskStation family features high-speed encrypted data transfer. This year, Synology adds 4K transcoding and BTRFS file system to its list of features. Here, we take a look at one of its most capable two-bay NAS, Synology DiskStation 2-Bay Diskless Network Attached Storage (DS716+).

Smart and modern style, nothing drastic has changed. The medium to top-of-the-line DiskStation have looked similar for the past few repetitions. However, is not a knock against the DS716+. We still love the tool-less HDD trays and the overall modern design. As this is a ‘Plus’ model, the DS716+ also features a USB 3.0 port at the front of the device, alongside a one-touch copy/backup button.

At the back of the DS716+ are two more USB 3.0 ports and an eSATA port for further expandability. The DS716+ is designed for the business environment. This means the small box is a solution for virtualization environments, including VMware, Citrix, and Microsoft Hyper-v. With VMware vSphere 5 and VAAI integration, it could also use to manage several Synology NAS servers from a single point using Synology Central Management System.

In the term of general user, this means that the DS716+ offers better performance, with enough power to do more than what an average household needs. In our tests, migration and setting up the DS716+ is faster than previous models. You could still navigate menus and open media files without interruptions, while the DS716+ performs thorough scans in the background.

4K content may yet to proliferate the common household completely, but the DS716+ lets you play 4K videos on devices that normally couldn’t. Using the DSM or the DS Video app, you could stream 4K content from the NAS to a PC or portable device. However, the performance is limited to the resolution of the display on the device and the speed of the connection. Test result show, the DS716+ dishes an average of 200MB/s and 110MB/s in a Gigabit network.

Fulfill your needs for safe data storage and ultra-high definition video sharing with the new Synology Disk Station DS716+. Compact yet powerful, DS716+ newly features an Intel quad-core CPU with AES-NI hardware encryption engine and 2GB RAM, providing outstanding performance and data encryption acceleration along with real-time transcoding of 4K Ultra HD source content. Synology Disk Station DS716+ is backed with Synology’s 3-year limited warranty. Powerful shared storage solution.
